E-7 Occupation Code Change Korea: How to Change Job Category [2026]
Last updated: 2026-05-09 | Source: 체류민원 자격별 안내 매뉴얼 (April 14, 2026)
- Changing occupation code requires a separate immigration application — not part of a regular renewal
- Must obtain approval before starting work in the new role/code
- New employer + new code = full change-of-status application with employer documents
- Code change does NOT reset your F-2-7 eligibility period
When Is a Code Change Required?
An E-7 occupation code change is required when your actual job duties shift materially to activities covered by a different occupation category from your current registered code. Common scenarios:
- You are promoted to a management role at the same company that falls under a different code
- You change employers and the new role uses a different code
- Your company restructures your role and the dominant duties now match a different code
- You switch from E-7-1 (specialized activity) to E-7-4 (points-based skilled worker) or vice versa
A change that only affects your job title without materially changing duties may not require a code change — but confirm with your immigration office to be safe.
Types of Code Change Situations
| Situation | Application Type | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Same employer, new occupation code | Activity scope change (활동범위 변경) | Moderate |
| New employer, new occupation code | Full change-of-status (체류자격 변경) | High |
| E-7-1 → E-7-4 (points-based) | Activity scope change + points assessment | High (points required) |
| New employer, same occupation code | Employer change notice (고용주 변경 신고) | Lower (same code) |
Applicant Documents
- Change-of-status application form (통합신청서)
- Passport (original)
- Alien Registration Card (original)
- Passport photo (3.5×4.5 cm, white background)
- Updated resume/CV — reflecting new role and how it matches the target code
- Degree certificate + transcript demonstrating qualification for new code (if different from current code's requirements)
- Career certificates / experience letters relevant to new occupation
- Income proof (원천징수영수증) — demonstrating salary meets target code's standard
Employer Documents
- Business registration certificate (within 3 months)
- Corporate registry extract — 등기부등본 (within 3 months)
- Updated employment contract reflecting new role, new occupation code, and salary
- Job description (직무기술서) — detailed description of new duties and why they match the target code
- Statement of necessity for code change — explaining the business reason for the role change
- Financial statements (recent 2 years) + tax payment certificate (납세증명서)
Application Process
- Confirm the target occupation code — verify that the new role appears on the current Ministry of Justice E-7 code list for 2026
- Prepare all documents — both applicant and employer items listed above
- DO NOT start the new role yet — beginning work before approval is unauthorized employment
- Submit at local immigration office — bring originals and copies; pay application fee (KRW 60,000 for status change)
- Await decision — typically 2–4 weeks; additional documents may be requested
- Receive new ARC — upon approval, your ARC is updated to reflect the new occupation code and employer if applicable
Starting employment in the new role before receiving immigration approval is a violation of the Immigration Control Act. Penalties include: deportation, prohibition from re-entering Korea for 1–10 years, and criminal charges for the employer. Submit your application and wait for the approval letter before making any role change.
Review Standards
Immigration officers evaluate code change applications on the following criteria:
| Review Factor | What Officers Look For |
|---|---|
| Code match | Actual duties described in job description align with the target code definition |
| Applicant qualifications | Degree or experience meets the minimum for the new code (same standards as initial issuance) |
| Salary | New salary meets the occupation-specific minimum (고시기준) for the target code |
| Employer standing | No outstanding immigration violations, tax delinquency, or legal issues |
| Business necessity | The employer's stated reason for the role change is credible and documented |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my degree need to match the new code?
Yes. Each code change is evaluated as if it were a fresh E-7 application for the new code. Your educational background and work experience must meet the minimum requirements for the target occupation code — the same standards that would apply if you were applying for that code for the first time.
Can I change codes while my current E-7 extension is pending?
You cannot simultaneously process both an extension and a code change. If your stay period is about to expire, consider whether an extension with the current code or a code change takes priority. In some cases, it may be simpler to extend first (maintaining current code) and then apply for the code change as a separate subsequent application.
Does changing codes affect my path to F-2-7?
No. Your total accumulated time on E-7 status (regardless of code changes) counts toward the 3-year eligibility period for F-2-7. What matters for F-2-7 is continuous legal status and meeting the points threshold at the time of application — not the specific code you held.
My job title changed but my actual work hasn't. Do I need to apply?
If your actual duties remain the same and still match your registered occupation code, a title-only change typically does not require a code change application. However, if the title change is accompanied by a formal promotion with new responsibilities, you should consult an immigration specialist to confirm whether the new duties fall within or outside your current code.
