1. What is the K-STAR Visa Track?

The K-STAR Visa Track (K-STAR: Korea-Science & Technology Advanced Human-Resources) is a Korean government fast-track residency program introduced by the Ministry of Justice (법무부) to attract and retain outstanding foreign science and technology talent studying at Korean universities.

Under K-STAR, eligible foreign STEM graduate students receive accelerated access to long-term residence (F-2) and permanent residency (F-5) — and may qualify for special naturalization if they demonstrate exceptional research achievements. The program was expanded in December 2025 and began full implementation in February 2026.

2. Who Qualifies for K-STAR?

The K-STAR Visa Track targets:

  • Foreign students enrolled in master's or doctoral programs in science and technology (STEM) fields at one of the 32 designated Korean universities
  • Students who are recommended by the president (총장) of their university as outstanding talent
  • Applicants must meet general immigration eligibility requirements (no criminal record, no immigration violations)

The program is designed for the most academically distinguished foreign graduate students — university president recommendation is required, reflecting the selective nature of the program.

3. Three Key Benefits of K-STAR

Immediate F-2 Residency

F-2 long-term residence status is granted immediately, even before the student secures employment — removing the typical requirement to confirm a job offer first.

F-5 Permanent Residency in 3 Years

The standard F-5 eligibility period is reduced from 6 years to 3 years for K-STAR participants — cutting the path to permanent residency in half.

Special Naturalization Eligibility

Participants who demonstrate exceptional research achievements may apply for special naturalization (특별귀화) — an extraordinary pathway to Korean citizenship.

4. 32 Designated Universities

K-STAR originally covered 5 specialized science and technology universities:

  • KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology)
  • DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology)
  • UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology)
  • GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology)
  • UST (University of Science and Technology)

The December 2025 expansion added 27 additional universities, bringing the total to 32 designated universities. For the complete and authoritative list of all 32 universities, please refer to the official Ministry of Justice announcement.

Note: The full list of all 32 universities is published in the Ministry of Justice official notice. We do not list universities beyond the original 5 to avoid inaccuracy — always verify current eligibility directly with the Ministry of Justice or your university's international office.
