F-4 Overseas Korean Visa — This page covers the F-4 visa for ethnic Koreans with foreign nationality: who qualifies, what documents are needed, and how the residence card works. Based on the official Immigration & Foreigner Policy Manual.
1. Overview
The F-4 visa (Overseas Korean) is issued to persons of Korean ethnicity who have obtained the nationality of a foreign country. It allows ethnic Koreans living abroad — commonly referred to as gyopo — to live, work, and operate businesses in Korea without the restrictions that apply to other foreigner categories.
The F-4 visa is valid for 2 years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as the holder continues to meet the eligibility criteria. An Alien Registration Card (Overseas Korean Residence Card) is issued to holders who register in Korea.
2. Who Is Eligible?
- Persons who formerly held Korean nationality and have since acquired the citizenship of another country
- Persons whose parent or grandparent was or is a Korean national (ethnic Korean lineage)
- Persons born to a Korean national parent abroad who automatically acquired another nationality at birth
Note: Ethnic Koreans with certain nationalities may face additional requirements. Persons with Chinese or CIS (former Soviet) nationalities are subject to specific rules. Contact us for a case-specific assessment.
