Introducing the Digital Nomad (Workcation) Visa in South Korea

Are you a remote worker seeking a change of scenery? South Korea’s Digital Nomad (Workcation) visa might just be the solution you’ve been looking for. Here’s everything you need to know about this exciting new visa category:

1. Visa Application

  • You can apply for the Digital Nomad visa at Diplomatic missions abroad or at your local immigration office if you’re already in Korea.

2. Eligible Applicants for Visa

  • To be eligible, you must be an overseas business owner or a foreigner affiliated with international companies, capable of working remotely in your industry for at least one year. Accompanying family members are also eligible.
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, except for dependent children.

3. Income Requirements

  • Applicants must demonstrate an income of at least twice the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of the previous year, as announced by the Bank of Korea.

4. Subscription to Medical Insurance

  • It’s mandatory to have individual medical insurance with a minimum coverage of KRW 100 million for medical treatment and repatriation to your home country during your stay.

5. Documents to Submit

  • Required documents include the visa application form (Form No. 17), passport, a standard size photo, and the applicable fee.
  • You’ll also need to provide documents proving your income, such as a certificate of employment, certificate of salary, and bank transaction certificate.
  • Additionally, you’ll need a criminal record certificate, certificate of medical insurance, and certificate of family relations if you’re accompanied by dependents. The criminal record certificate must be attached with Apostille (Consular Legalization).

6. Stay in Korea

  • The visa grants a one-year stay from the date of entry, extendable for an additional year (up to a maximum of 2 years).
  • Employment and profit-making activities are restricted under this visa category.
  • Those initially on short-term tourist visas (B-1, B-2, C-3) can change their status to a Digital Nomad visa upon meeting the relevant requirements.

The Digital Nomad (Workcation) visa opens up exciting possibilities for remote workers to experience South Korea while continuing their professional endeavors. Whether you’re drawn to the bustling cities or serene countryside, this visa offers the flexibility to work and explore in one of Asia’s most dynamic countries.
