Korea E-3 Research Visa — Degree, Experience and Waiver Criteria

Overview

E-3 (Research) covers foreign nationals engaged in natural-science research or R&D of advanced industrial technology. The current manual also includes researchers in social sciences, humanities, arts and physical education.

Two things decide the case: whether your institution is one of the research bodies listed in the manual, and whether you hold a doctorate, or a master's degree plus three years of experience.

Who Qualifies

• Researchers at institutes designated under the Support of Specific Research Institutes Act and related statutes, in natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts/PE, or advanced industrial R&D
• Scientists engaged in research at institutes under the Defense Acquisition Program Act
• Scientists contracted with corporate research institutes, industrial technology research cooperatives, universities, industry-academic cooperation foundations or national/public research institutes
• Researchers at government-funded, national/public or corporate research institutes with an employment recommendation from the Minister of Science and ICT
• Those conducting social science, humanities or arts/PE research at junior colleges and above or academic research institutions

Required Documents

• Integrated Application Form (Form No. 34), passport and ARC, fee
• Employment contract (original and copy)
• Copy of degree certificate and career certificate (where the experience requirement applies)
• Evidence of the research institution such as a copy of the business registration certificate
• Employment recommendation from the competent minister (where required)
• Proof of residence

Application Process

1. Check eligibility — confirm your current status, career, degree and contract type match the requirements.
2. Prepare documents — foreign public documents need a translator's certification plus an apostille (or consular confirmation for non-member states).
3. Book a visit — reserve a slot at your Immigration Office via HiKorea (www.hikorea.go.kr), or file online where e-Application is available.
4. File and pay — submit the Integrated Application Form (Form No. 34) and pay the screening fee.
5. Review — respond to any request for supplementary documents within the deadline.
6. Result — on approval, the period of stay and status are granted; reissue your ARC if required.

Key Points

• Experience waiver applies to: (1) master's degree holders who graduated from a Korean university, (2) master's degree holders from overseas universities in the TIMES top 200 or QS top 500, and (3) authors of papers indexed in SCIE, A&HCI, SCI or SSCI (first, co- or corresponding author).
• E-3 is professional status, so adding or changing a workplace is a post-facto report within 15 days.
• A pilot out-of-status activity rule exists for adult spouses of domestic master's/doctoral students and of E-1/E-3/E-4/E-5 holders; check separately if your spouse plans to work.
• Documents issued in Korea must normally be dated within 3 months unless another validity period applies.
• Documents already on file in your alien registration record need not be resubmitted.
• Health certificates, drug test results and pre-employment medical reports must be submitted sealed by the issuing hospital (do not open).
• You must be in Korea when applying; leaving the country after filing may result in refusal.
• Screening fees are non-refundable once the application is accepted.
• The head of the Immigration Office may add or waive documents where necessary for review.
